Road toll charge in Romania – in force since January
2005
On January 1 2005, a new toll charge was introduced
for the use of Romanian national highways. It is payable not only by
citizens of Romania but also foreigners traveling in Romania. The cost of
the toll sticker (Rovignette) depends on the exhaust classification of the
vehicle (Non-Euro, Euro I, Euro II and above) and, for foreigners, on the
duration of their stay in Romania. The Rovignette can be paid for on
entering the country (at the border crossing points) and is valid for the
period of time the Romanian national highways are used. Unfortunately,
attention is not drawn to the new toll charge on entry, as it is in Hungary
or Austria for example, nor by border officials or customs officers. The
Rovignette will then have to be paid for on leaving the country, but with a
penalty charge added (between ROL 3 and 4.5 million – equivalent to between
EUR 80 and 130 – for cars and between ROL 15 and 25 million – EUR 410 and
680 – for minibuses).
